Designated Course Roles within a Blackboard course section control access to the content and tools within that course. Each user is assigned a role for each course they participate in. The Course Role is set when a user is enrolled, but can also be modified afterwards from the Control Panel. The following course roles are available within Blackboard at NIU:

Student

The Student Role is the default role used when adding a new user to a course. This is also the role assigned to students who are registered for the course. Users with the role of Student cannot access any areas of the control panel.

Instructor

The Instructor Role is has access to all areas of the Control Panel and is generally given to those developing or teaching the class. Faculty Members may access a course that is unavailable to Students.

Teaching Assistant

Teaching Assistants have access to most features of the Control Panel. Teaching Assistants are not listed in the Course Catalog listing within Blackboard may not remove the instructor from the course. Teaching Assistants may access a course that is unavailable to Students.

Course Builder

The Course Builder Role is appropriate for a user to manage the course without having access to Student grades. The Course Builder role has access to most areas of the Control Panel with the exception of the gradebook. A Course Builder can access the course if it is unavilable to Students. A user with the role of Course Builder cannot remove the Faculty Member from the Course.

Grader

The Grader Role is used for an individual who assists the Faculty Member in the creation, management, delivery, and grading of Assessments. A Grader may also assists the Faculty Member with managing the Gradebook. A Grader cannot access a course if it is set to be unavailable to Students.

Guest

The role of Guest can be used to grant visitors access to specific areas within the course. Visitors cannot access the control and can only access portions of the course in which guest access has been enabled.
