Activating ActiveX Control in IE7 to Enable Text Box Editing

NIU Blackboard users may notice a warning message when attempting to edit Annoucements or enter descriptions for the files they post in the Content Area. The following instructions will guide you through enabling ActiveX Control in Internet Explorer 7 in order to edit text in Text Box areas.

Blackboard users who have upgraded to IE7 will see a yellow box with a warning message when trying to edit Text Box areas "This website wants to run the following add-on: 'Microsoft (R) Dynamic HTML Editing Control' from 'Microsoft Corporation'. If you trust the website and the add-on and want to allow it to run, click here...".

Additionally, in the Text Box area itself you may notice the following message: 'Press SPACEBAR or ENTER to activate and use this control'.

To be able to edit Text Box areas (for entering Announcements or providing descriptions for your Assignments, Tests, Files) you need to enable ActiveX Control to run. To do that, right-click on the yellow bar with the message and select 'Run ActiveX Control'.

Click on the 'Run' button.

To begin editing Text Box area, either click on the area itself or press the spacebar.
