Periodically during the semester, it is prudent to download the Blackboard gradebook as a backup. **Note - Gradebook entries for a student who has dropped the course CANNOT be recovered once the course drop has been processed by Registration and Records and the student has subsequently been automatically removed from the corresponding Blackboard course section. It is, therefore, highly recommended that faculty members download the gradebook after entering each major course grade into the Gradebook. The downloaded Gradebook will be an XLS (tab delimited) file that can be opened in Excel or other spreadsheet programs.

  • Go to the Control Panel, click on Gradebook, then click Download Grades and then Select delimited type (we recommend tab)
  • Click on Submit
  • Click Download and then click SAVE
  • By default, the file will be named gb_export.xls. When opening the file in Excel, change file type to All files to find file type. You can change the file name and type (Excel).
  • After downloading file, open in preferred spreadsheet program and save in an appropriate directory, perhaps the folder holding other files for the course.
  • Once the file is in the external spreadsheet, the user can formulate and add to the data.
