Grading Discussion

Student interactions within the Discussion Board serve as a permanent record of participation within a course. Once grading is enabled at the Forum or Thread level, Blackboard automatically creates a grade button and corresponding column within the Grade Center. The following section outlines steps for enabling grading and selecting the appropriate grading option.

Enabling Grading

  1. Click Communication on the Course Homepage.

  4. Once at the Discussion Board area, click the Modify button for the Forum in which grading will be enabled.

  5. Using the options outlined below as a reference, select the appropriate grading mode.
    Grading Options

    Grading Option Details
    • No grading in Forum: Grading is not enabled.
    • Grade Forum: Select this option to assign a signle score to the Forum (no matter how many threads a student posts).
    • Grade Threads: Select this option to assign a score to each thread in the Forum. Note: With this option, students cannot create new threads.

  6. To apply changes, click the Submit button. Note: If the Grade Forum option is selected, make sure to fill in the Points possible box.

  7. Forums with Grading enabled are easily identified with an icon appearing in the Grade column.

    Note: When grading is enabled on a Forum, a corresponding Grade Center column is also created.

Grading Forums

  1. Click Communication on the Course Homepage.

  2. Click Discussion Board.
  3. Discussion Board
  4. Find the Forum to be graded and click the corresponding icon grading icon.

  5. To begin grading, click the Grade button for a student. At this time, Blackboard retrieves all threads (within the particular Forum) posted by the selected student.

  6. After reviewing the threads, enter the points earned into the Grade textbox.

  7. To save the score, click the Submit button.
  8. Submit
  9. Once the score is saved, point values are updated in the Grade Forum and Grade Center areas.

Grading Threads

  1. Click Communication on the Course Homepage.

  2. Click Discussion Board.
  3. Discussion Board
  4. Click the Forum title to be graded.

  5. To enable grading for the thread, click the Enable button.

  6. Enter in the points possible for the thread.

  7. Click the Submit button.

  9. To grade the thread, click the grading icon icon.

  10. Enter the points earned into the Grade textbox.

  12. Once the score is saved, point values are updated in the Grade Forum and Grade Center areas.
